Khalaf Najib (1882–1944)

Khalaf Najib was a Lebanese writer, poet, and journalist. He was also trained as a lawyer.

He was born in Baskinta (Metn District, Lebanon) on April 10, 1887. He began his education in his village’s national school, then continued at a Russian school, and later attended the American School in Souk El Gharb.

He worked for several years as a teacher in schools in Shweifat, Baskinta, and Broummana. During that time, he studied law under his brother and other legal scholars. He later practiced law for about forty years, gaining a reputation for integrity and professionalism.

Among those influenced by him were notable figures such as:

  • Poet Boulos Salameh
  • Journalist Louis Hage
  • Archbishop and writer Antonios Bashir

He was highly skilled in languages, mastering:

  • Arabic
  • French
  • English
  • Turkish

It is noted that during the French Mandate, he would plead cases in French, sometimes even better than the French judges themselves, who would need interpreters.

He died on July 11, 1944, after suffering a brain clot (stroke) while actively arguing a case in court.
